Names for the Eccentric Aristocrats

Edith Sitwell and her brothers Osbert and Sacheverell by Cecil Beaton
This is essentially a companion to the "For the Shabby Aristocrat Family", but less modern. I love these sort of names, the ones I can imagine on rich families from the 1900's to the 20's, that perhaps didn't fit in with their peers. The Aunt was probably wild and traveled the world, always bringing gifts for the children and never settling down. The father was obsessed with finding first edition classics and spent all his money on it, while the mother was a celebrated beauty who rubbed elbows with artists and intellects. The daughter had a fling with a jazz musician, and the son lived modestly renouncing his aristocratic roots. They all have weird little nicknames for each other, derived from their actual names or not, and most of their names could only be pulled off by someone as strangely cool as them.

January

Vogue, January 15th 1919
I'm going to be doing a series of posts on all the months, focusing on names that are associated and inspired by said month, which for today, is January. January is the first month of the year, and is thirty-one days long. January was named after Janus, the Roman God of beginnings and doorways. He is normally depicted with two faces, which is why cats with Diprosopus, a rare congenital disorder where the person or animal has essentially multiple faces, are commonly referred to as "Janus cats".

The birthstone for January is the garnet, the flower is traditionally the pink carnation, but sometimes it is the galanthus or snowdrop. In China the flower is a plum blossom and in Japan, the camellia. The zodiac signs are Capricorn, the sea goat (a goat with the tail of a fish), and Aquarius, the water carrier Ganymede.

January in Other Languages:Janvier (French), Tammikuu (Finnish)
January as a Name:Januarius, Januaria, and of course, January
Flowers:Carnation, Dianthus, Galanthus, Snowdrop, Plum, Blossom, Camellia, Gillyflower (A name for the carnation)
Gems:Garnet, Almandine, Pyrope, Marjorite (The last three are all species of garnet)
Zodiac:Capricorn, Aquarius, Ganymede, Arwa ("Mountain goat"), Giles ("Young goat"), Jael ("Mountain Goat"), Mortimer ("Still water"), Tallulah ("Leaping waters"), Mayim ("Water")
First:Primo ("First"), Primrose ("First rose"), Winona ("Firstborn daughter"), Proteus ("First")

Names Worn by Bibi Andersson

Bibi Andersson
Bibi Andersson was born Berit Elisabeth Andersson in Kungsholm, Stockholm, to Karin, a social worker, and Josef, a businessman. Her elder sister, Gerd, was a ballerina who eventually became an actress, while Bibi did bit parts and commercials to further her career. It was in a commercial for detergent that she first worked with Ingmar Bergman, who would go on to become one of the most famous directors of Sweden, and who would give her much of her work.
She started attending the Royal Dramatic Theatre's acting school, but quit to follow Ingmar, who she had started a relationship with. Her role as Alma in "Persona" (which she won an award for), furthered her career greatly, and she started getting work outside of Sweden, like in the Western "Duel at Diablo", opposite James Garner and Sidney Poitier.
The 90's saw her working as a theatre director, and a supervisor for Road to Sarajevo. Unfortunately, it was reported in 2010 that she had suffered from a stroke, and that it had left her hospitalized. Bibi has been married three times, her first marriage producing a daughter named Jenny Matilde Grede. She has been married to Gabriel Mora Baeza since 2008.

Eivor - "Rabies" - This name comes from the Old Norse auja, "gift, good fortune", and vor, "vigilant, cautious" and is pronounced "AY-vorr."

Alma - "Persona" - I love this name. It could come from the Latin almus, which means "nourishing", or simply alma, the Spanish word for "soul". It's still pretty unusual, and has the perfect sort of vintage glamour which I think will help propel it into the limelight sometime soon.

Siv - "Jag rodnar" - Siv, pronounced "SEEV", is an Old Norse name meaning "bride". Another form, Sif, has recently been seen in "Thor" on the character played by Jaimie Alexander. Sif was a Norse Goddess and is Thor's wife and is associated with the earth, fertility, family, and marriages.

Arkadina - "Måsen" - I think this name is gorgeous and really romantic. Arkadina is most likely a feminine form of the Russian Arkadiy. Uma Thurman's daughter is Rosalind Arusha Arkadina Altalune Florence.

Tekla - "Fordringsägare" - This is the Hungarian and Georgian form of the Greek name Thekla, which came from Theokleia, which means "glory of God". Saint Thekla was supposedly the very first female martyr.

Solveig - "Shit Happens" - This lovely Scandinavian name means "sun strength" and is pronounced "SOL-vay" in Swedish and "SOL-vi" in Norwegian.

On My Mind: 2-1-16

Daisy Ridley
Daisy - Daisy was a name I could never get behind. I thought it was too cutesy, too, well, flowery. But Star Wars breakout Daisy Ridley has really changed my opinion. She's spunky and sweet, and portrayed the passionate Rey wonderfully. Her full name is Daisy Jazz Isobel Ridley, and has five sisters, two of which are named Kika-Rose and Poppy Sophia. According to Daisy, J.J. Abrams loved saying her full name, stating it had a nice feminine first but was balanced out by the hard masculine Ridley.

Domhnall - Another actor in "The Force Awakens", an Irishman who's gotten tons of good work lately, including "The Revenant", "Ex Machina", and Oscar nominated "Brooklyn". He is still probably most famous, however, for portraying Bill Weasley, alongside his father, Brendan Gleeson, who played Mad-Eye Moody. Domhnall often describes the pronunciation of his name as "tonal with a D". It's the Gaelic form of Donald, which means "ruler of the world".

Double Names + Others - I went to a funeral last week for my mother's cousin, a woman I've never met but have heard a lot of stories about. It has never occurred to me before, but our family has an abundance of people with double names, or people who are referred to by their first and middle. They range from the very mundane Elizabeth Ann, Fred Allan, Roy Allan, to the slightly more unusual Edna Myrle (even my mother's cat had a double name - Wallace Earl). My mother commented on how she thinks it's because many people are juniors and it's easier to refer to them like that as opposed to calling everyone Little Roy and Big Roy. The funeral got us all talking about family, and more unusual names cropped up. Butch, called affectionately Butchie, Bark (full name Barkley), Mattie Dell, Gussie Odell, Jearldean etc. They were all very interesting! For more names from my family tree, you can refer to the posts I made during my Ancestry craze split into two sections - Maternal, and Paternal.

Milam - The cemetery was very old and hard to get to. Even though my feet were killing me because I decided to wear high-heeled boots, I was able to hobble over to see a few headstones. One had a man named Milam, middle name Carroll. I commented on how unusual it was, and my father said he'd seen the name, and then my grandmother's husband said it was pronounced "MY-lum". It's one I've never seen before, and now I've found out that it's a county in Texas, which makes a little sense. Milam county is named for Benjamin Rush Milam, a soldier and settler during the Texas Revolution.

Photoplay, February 1921
February is the second month of the year. It is the shortest month and the only month with fewer than thirty days in it. The Romans called the month Februarius which came from the Latin februum, which means "purification". Februa was a purification festival held by the Romans from the 13th of February to the 15th, which was sort of a "spring cleaning" type of ritual. A God, Februus, who personified the month and purification, came afterwards, and may have even gone on to become Febris, (meaning "fever") a Goddess of her namesake and malaria.

In Finland February is called Helmikku, which means "month of pearls", referring to the snow droplets on branches that freeze into something resembling pearls.
It's birth flower is the Violet and common Primrose. The birthstone is the Amethyst, a gem thought to protect one from becoming drunk, and the Zodiac signs are Aquarius, the water carrier Ganymede, and Pisces, the fish.

February is best known for Valentine's Day, a holiday to celebrate love and lovers, which came from a celebration of the Saint Valentinus. Legend states that while imprisoned he healed the daughter of the jailer, and left her a note signed "Your Valentine".

February in Other Languages: Février (French), Febrero (Spanish), Febbraio (Italian), Helmikku (Finnish)
Flowers: Primrose, Violet, Primula (Primula vulgaris is the scientific name for the common Primrose), Viola (The Violet genus).
Gems: Amethyst, Amethystos (the Greek word for it, and also a woman from mythology)
Zodiac: Aquarius, Ganymede, Pisces, Aysu (moon water), Arethusa (possibly "the waterer"; a nymph), Dalit ("to draw water"), Damla ("water drop"), Douglas ("dark river"), Mortimer ("still water"), Niloofar ("water lily"), Irving ("green water"), Mina ("fish"), Minali ("fish catcher").
Second: Secundus
Valentine's: Valentine, Valentinus, Valentina, Valent, Valentin, Valentino; Bihotz ("heart"), Angharad ("more love"), Cordula ("heart"), Amadeus ("love of God"), Hubert ("bright heart"), Dove, Kokoro ("heart, spirit"), Philomena ("friend, lover), Lev ("heart"), Kerensa ("love"), Jonah ("dove")
Other: Februarius, Februus, Febris

"The Sisters Zénaïde and Charlotte Bonaparte" by Jacques-Louis David
Jacques-Louis David lived from 1794 to 1825. He painted in the neoclassical style, and his style was vastly different from the Rococo style - which was beautiful but frivolous - and made way for more severe, serious work. David was a friend of Maximilian Robespierre, and was essentially the director of arts under the French Republic.

Hazel Forbes by Alfred Cheney Johnston
The "Ziegfeld Follies" were theatrical productions on Brodway which ran from 1907 to 1931, with two more shows in 1934 and 1936. They were the brainchild of Florenz Ziegfeld (though his wife probably thought it up), who was inspired by the Folies Bergère, a famous cabaret music hall in Paris. Almost as famous as the shows themselves were the "Ziegfeld Girls", beautiful chorus girls in elaborate dresses. Many actresses were also Ziegfeld Girls, from Marion Davies to Barbara Stanwyck (a few listed below later became actresses) and just as many were turned down, including Lucille Ball, Norma Shearer, and Joan Crawford. Tomboy: Boys' Nicknames for Girls

$

Toby Wing (born Martha Virginia)
I've noticed a lot of people really like boy or at least boyish nicknames for girls here lately, and as a society this says a lot about us. It all boils down to this: masculine = good, feminine = bad, even for women. Boys aren't allowed to be feminine, and it has contributed to an ideal of hyper masculinity, which not only damages us women, but boys too. And of course it's a good thing if little girls prefer playing in the mud to painting their nails or playing with dolls, when all of these things should not only be available, but accepted and endorsed for all people and children, regardless of gender.
I'm not exempt from this trend, though.
My favorite name right now is Josephine, and I'm certain if I had one I'd call her Jo or Joey half the time. I think it's something worth thinking about, and talking about, though naming is just a ripple in the pool of gender politics.
But I'm going to throw politics to the side for a moment, and have a little fun and see what I can come up with.
What are your thoughts?
What boys' nicknames do you like for girls, and how do you get to them?
