"Spring" by James Jacques-Joseph Tissot
This is a little bit late! It's spring now, though it certainly doesn't feel like it here. One day it's cold and the next muggy. We just had a short rain, and it felt like a shower out there. I've always liked spring, despite my poor allergies and the unruly weather, as I'm a spring baby myself.
Please, let me know what you think of these names and which you would add!

Romy Schneider in "Ludwig"
I've always preferred shorter names, and while I love the elegance and drama of a long name like Anastasia or Theodosia, I just could never imagine myself actually using one in real life. So this list is dedicated to the sort of name I like, short but sweet, refined, and with a hint of spark.

Isild Le Besco
Just so people know for further posts - I can't always come up with three names for each gender, so sometimes there may be a few less, as is the case today!

Isild - I came across French actress Isild Le Besco and loved her name. She is Breton, Algerian, Vietnamese, and French. My instincts are telling me it's a form of Isolde, via it's (possible) original form Ishild, meaning "ice battle". She also has a sister who is an actress and a director named Maïwenn, a brother named Jowan, and half-siblings Kolia Litscher (m), and Léonor Graser.

Spyridon - A couple have been battling over the name of their baby, so they took the internet for help. The father wants Spyridon, the name of his father, and she wants Michael, the name of her father. So now he has a petition, hoping that he can win her over. Which would you pick?

Enya - The Irish singer, who contributed music to "The Fellowship of the Ring", was born Eithne Ní Bhraonáin, but is anglicized as Enya Brennan. Eithne, the original form, means "kernel" and was a Saint, the sister of Saint Fidelma. Her siblings are: Máire "Moya", Pól, Brídín, Olive, Ciarán, Deirdre, Leon, and Bartley Brennan.

Avery - I've been watching the last few episodes of "Justified" with my parents, and Sam Elliott is playing a character named Avery Markham. I guess I've never really given any thought to the name Avery, on a boy or girl, so I was surprised by how much I liked it. It seems surprisingly cool on a guy.

Arianwen - Another actress with an unusual name is Arianwen Parkes-Lockwood. While the actress is Australian, the name is all Welsh. It's a combination of arian, "silver", and gwen, which can mean "white", "fair", or "blessed". There was also a very early Saint Arianwen.

WAMPAS Baby Stars of 1928
The WAMPAS Baby Stars was a campaign that ran from 1922 to 1934, which usually honored thirteen actresses, and was sponsored by the United States Western Association of Motion Picture Advertisers. The actresses that were chosen were thought to be just on the cusp of stardom, and those that got the honor of an award got extensive coverage in the media and went to the "WAMPAS Frolic" party. I find this whole thing extremely fascinating, and wanted to post the names of the girls chosen.

Janet Gaynor
Origin: English
Gender: Female
Meaning: Diminutive of Jane
Pronunciation: JAN-it
Other forms: Jeannette, Jane, Jeanne, Zsanett

Thanks to my very own sister, Abby, for suggesting Janet!

It's always strange to me how in the future names like Janet, Barbara, and Lois will be fashionable just like Evelyn, Ruby, and Matilda are now. On a semi-related note, it's also a strange thought that there will be Grandmother Neveah's and Grandfather Jaxon's, and that this will totally normal to them. It begs the question of what names do you think will become ultra fashionable in the future? I'm betting on Pamela, Eugene, Nancy, Leonard, Deborah, and Janet. What do you think will become popular?

Moving back on to the main topic, which is Janet itself. I remember being really surprised when I started watching "Salem" how one of the main characters was played by an English actress named Janet Montgomery, who is only twenty-nine. When I think of a Janet, I definitely think of someone older, but when she was born, 1985, Janet was still sitting rather prettily at #205 (in the US). Janet is originally an Medieval nickname for Jane, probably coming from the French Jeannette. There are a plethora of namesakes, like actresses Janet Leigh and Janet McTeer, singer Janet Jackson, and author and activist Janet Mock.

Janet Gaynor, another namesake, was an actress who started with small roles in silent films, but went on to win the first Oscar in 1929. She won the Oscar for three separate film roles - "7th Heaven", "Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans", and "Street Angel". She is the only actress to have ever done so. One of her best known films is the 1937 "A Star is Born", for which she was nominated for an Academy Award, though in 1939 she retired from acting.
She was born Laura Augusta Gainor in Philedelphia and was known as "Lolly". She was married three times, and in one she was married to the openly gay costume designer Adrian, in what has been called a "Lavender Marriage", as she herself was reported to have been gay or bisexual. Her lover had been rumored to be actress Mary Martin. Actor Bob Cummings once said "Janet Gaynor's husband was Adrian, but her wife was Mary Martin". She died in 1984 at the age of seventy-seventy due to injures from a car accident, and is buried to Adrian in the Hollywood Forever Cemetery.

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, and Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, with HRH Princess Charlotte of Cambridge
I've been waiting and waiting to see what the Duke and Duchess would be naming their little girl, and it has finally been announced: Charlotte Elizabeth Diana.
A perfect name for a little princess. I was quite surprised at the choice of Diana - I didn't think they would be able to slip that one past! But I'm happy they did.
Their first baby is HRH Prince George Alexander Louis of Cambridge.

A Young Lady Moorea Hastings
Moorea - I've been looking at paintings and one was of Marchesa Luisa Casati (born Luisa Adele Rosa Maria Amman), a popular artist's model. She had one grandchild via her daughter Cristina, a girl named Moorea. An island in French Polynesia called Mo'orea (or sometimes simply Moorea), which means "yellow lizard", is where she was conceived and was subsequently named after.

Pericles and Octavius - Moorea went on to have two sons with her two husbands, the Hon. Pericles Plantagenet James Casati Wyatt and Octavius Orlando Irvine Casati Black. To me they sound like characters out of "Harry Potter". Pericles comes from the Greek peri, "around, in excess", and kleos, which means "glory". Pericles was most famously an Athenian general.

Hecate - I'm so thrilled Showtime's "Penny Dreadful" is back on. It premiered last night, and it was as sumptuous and wild as the first season was. This season's antagonist is Madame Kali aka Evelyn Poole, played wonderfully by Helen McCrory. She is a witch, and has many lovely daughters. Only one has been given a name (so far), and it is quite appropriately Hecate. Hecate is a Greek name possibly meaning "far off", and is a form of the original Hekate. The Goddess Hecate is associated with not only witchcraft, magic, sorcery, and necromancy, but the moon, dogs (her arrival is said to be heralded by the sounds of howling dogs), the underworld, crossroads, ghosts, keys, and knowledge of herbs and poisonous plants. She is often depicted in triple form as a mother, maiden, and crone.
