The American, May, 1923
I'm sorry I didn't actually get to post this in May but right when I was going to I got really ill and couldn't even get on the computer.

May is the fifth month of the year. May was named for the Greek Goddess Maia, a daughter of Atlas, a Pleiade, and the mother of the God Hermes, whose Roman counter part was the fertility Goddess Bona Dea, whose festivals were held during the month. The festival allowed women to make blood sacrifices and use strong wines, which was forbidden at the time. Men were not allowed to know her "mysteries" or her true name. Ovid gives us another idea - that May came from the Latin word maiores, which meant "elders", and that the following month, June, was named for the "young people".

The birthstone for May is the emerald, and the birth flower is the lily-of-the-valley and the common hawthorn. Epigaea repens, commonly referred to as the mayflower, is for us North Americans, the sign that May has arrived. The Zodiac signs are Taurus, the Cretan bull, and Gemini, the twins Castor and Pollux, brothers who achieved godhood after death.

May in other langauges: Mei (Dutch), Toukokuu (Finnish)
May as a name: May, Gwalchmei (possibly "May hawk")
Flowers: Lily, Hawthorn, Mayflower, Kielo ("lily-of-the-valley")
Gems: Emerald, Esmeraude (Old French version), Esmeralda (Spanish name meaning "emerald"), Emeraude (Possibly French or Middle English version), Beryl (emerald is a type of beryl)
Zodiac: Taurus, Fintan ("white bull" or "white fire"), Byron ("place of the cow sheds"), Enikő ("deer" or "cow"), Hathor (An ancient Egyptian Goddess associated with cattle); Gemini, Castor, Pollux, Thomas ("twin")
Fifth: Pontius ("fifth"), Quintus ("fifth")
Other: Maia

Jolie is seated in the front and from l-r is Magda, Zsa Zsa, and Eva.
Known as much for their beauty and style as for their multiple marriages, the three Gabor sisters, all actresses and socialites in their own rights, were an interesting bunch. Born in Hungary to Vilmos Gábor, a soldier, and Janka "Jolie" Tillman, her nickname being the French word for "pretty", though she purported her name was Jancsi, a name for boys', saying that it was because her parents were so eager to have one. Jolie was born to a Jewish couple from Galicia, and owned a jewelry shop called "The Diamond House". She had two older sisters, Zseni "Janette", and Dora, along with a younger sister Rozalie "Rozsika", and a younger brother Sebastian. Jolie eventually divorced Vilmos and would go on to marry twice more. They narrowly escaped Hungary in WWII.

The Gabor sisters are:

Magdolna "Magda" -

Magda, the eldest and least known of the sisters, was said to have stood at 5'6" with red hair and gray eyes. She married six times, three which ended in divorce, two left her widowed, and one was annulled, but none of them produced children. One of her husbands was actor George Sanders, who would later go on to marry her sister, Zsa Zsa. Magdolna is a the Hungarian form of Magdalene.

Sári "Zsa Zsa" -

The most famous of all three, Zsa Zsa began her career on a stage in Vienna and was even crowned Miss Hungary in 1936. She was said to have been named after Sári Fedák, an actress and singer, credited with being of the two best know Hungarian female operetta stars of all time. Sári is a Hungarian diminutive of Sarah. Best known for one of her only leading roles in "Moulin Rouge" as real life dancer Jane Avril, she was married nine times, once to George Sanders and once to hotel magnate Conrad Hilton, which produced Constance Francesca Gabor Hilton, who went just by Francesca, who was the great-aunt of Nicky and Paris Hilton and one time sister-in-law to Elizabeth Taylor. Gerold Frank, who helped her write her autobiography said this of Zsa Zsa:

"Zsa Zsa is unique. She's a woman from the court of Louis XV who has somehow managed to live in the 20th century, undamaged by the PTA ... She says she wants to be all the Pompadours and Du Barrys of history rolled into one, but she also says, 'I always goof. I pay all my own bills. ... I want to choose the man. I do not permit men to choose me.'"

Eva -

Eva is best remembered for her role in the sitcom "Green Acres", and for voicing the characters of Duchess in "The Aristocats" and Bianca in "The Rescuers" franchise. She was married five times, and had no children. Strangely, she died before her mother but Jolie was never told of her death. Eva is a lovely pan-European name that is used from Spain to Russia to Iceland, and it originally the Latinate form of Biblical Eve.

"Summer Clouds" by Charles Courtney Curran
Much to my shock I forgot to even post my summer names! Summer is my least favorite season. I like it in theory and always dream it's gonna involve me sipping juice on the porch in some cute shorts and sunglasses, spending days lounging in the pool, and reading in the sun. Unfortunately it is never like that, and I've come to realize I'm never going to have a "movie" summer. In Texas summer is dry as a bone, without even a breath of air, opposed to winter where everything is wet. You burn yourself on the car and then on the seat belt, and then you melt all your makeup off trying to wait for the air conditioning to cool down. It's just no fun. But, that does not mean I will neglect my duty to post some summer names.

Summer Names:

Somerled - "Summer traveller"
Suvi - "Summer"

Women's Home Companion, June 1916
June is the sixth month of the year. Junius or Iunius is what the Romans called it, and there are a few differing tales as to how it's name came to be. Ovid gives two different ideas: one, that it came from the name of the Goddess Juno, wife of Jupiter, the supreme deity, and two, that it was inspired by the word iuniores which meant "younger ones", as it followed May, which might have been inspired by maiores, "elders". Ovid also claims that mid-May through mid-June is not an ideal time for marriages, as instructed by the high Priestess of Jupiter, but Plutarch thinks that the entirety of June is better than any of May for a wedding. There were multiple festivals held during June, one being the festival of the Goddess Bellona. Similar to Athena, Bellona, originally called Duellona, was the Goddess of the destructive and belligerent parts of war and consort to the God Mars. Often depicted holding a sword or spear, along with a torch or whip, she was said to ride into battle on a chariot pulled by four horses.

The birthstones of June are the pearl, alexandrite, and moonstone. The birth flowers are rose and honeysuckle, and the Zodiac signs are the twins Gemini, and the crab Cancer, inspired by the giant crab the karkinos which harassed Heracles during his battle with the hydra.

Minute Maid Park on Friday
Avisail - I went to my first ever sports game this past Friday and absolutely loved it. One of the men on the other team, The White Sox, had the name Avisail, which I thought was really interesting. He's originally from Venezuela, but I can't find much on the name outside of him.

Dutch Names - These Dutch birth announcements were so amazing, I loved almost every single one. My favorites were twins Alexander Bonifas Maurits and Valentijn Hendrik Jaap, Fleurance Maryse Juliette, Josephine Duveken Elizabeth, and Victoria Vesper. I thought it was interesting that the Dutch are also into animal names: a little boy was named Vos - Dutch for "fox".

Interesting Sibset - The whole ball game was apart of one of our church's functions, and three little girls from our church sat behind us with my cousin. I finally got the opportunity to hear all their names - Waylon, Gigi, and Sylvie.

Princess Louise, Princess Maud, and Princess Victoria. Maud was nicknamed "Harry".
In my many posts on royal names, I've found that the royals tend to come up with some very creative nicknames. This post is purely fun, a list of the nicknames I've amassed over the series and a few more I've yet to write about. And on this topic, what's the most creative or quirky nickname you've ever heard?

Princess Victoria Melita of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha - "Ducky"

Maud of Wales - Princess Maud was a lively tomboy and was called "Harry" affectionately

William, Prince of Orange - "Wiwill"

Princess Beatrice of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha - "Baby Bee"

Princess Alexandrine of Prussia - "Adini"

Princess Elisabeth of Greece and Denmark - Called "Woolly" because of her thick, dark hair

Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia - "Shvibzik" which meant "imp"

Maximilian Emmanuel, Duke in Bavaria - "Mapperl"

Maria Feodorovna - "Minnie"

Princess Maria of Yugoslavia - "Mignon"

Prince Friedrich of Hesse and by Rhine - "Frittie"

Louise Élisabeth, Duchess of Parma - "Babette"

Princess Margaret of Connaught - "Daisy"

Princess Helena Victoria of Schleswig-Holstein - "Thora"

Princess Marie of Hesse and by Rhine - "May" or "Maly"

Princess Margaret of Prussia - By the time she was christened her head was covered with short hair like moss, thus she got the nickname "Mossy"

Princess Sophia of Prussia - Called "Sossy", probably because it rhymed with her sister's "Mossy"

Inès, Nine and Violette, 2008
Nine and Violette - Inès de La Fressange (full name Inès Marie Lætitia Églantine Isabelle de Seignard de La Fressange)  is a model, aristocrat, and designer, known all around for her style. At the age of 51 she walked the runway for Gaultier and later Chanel. She was married to Luigi d'Urso until his death in 2006. They had two daughters, Nine Marie d'Urso and Violette Marie d'Urso. She also has two stepdaughters, India and Clotilde.

Oscar Holly - I'm totally in love with actress Robin Tunney and her husband Nicky Marmet named their boy, Oscar Holly, which I discovered in this Nameberry post. I love seeing nature names used on boys!

Lolita - It's always super surprising to see this name used in real life, even though I think the sound is absolutely beautiful. French actress Isabelle Huppert has a grown daughter, Lolita Chammah, who is also an actress. Her brothers are Lorezno and Angelo. Their father is Lebanese actor Ronald Chammah.

The Saturday Evening Post, July 25th 1914
I'm so sorry I haven't been keeping up with the month posts but I've recently gotten a job and I'm still adjusting to it and trying to get back to doing anything outside of work! So I'm going to quickly try and catch up starting with July.

July is the seventh month of the year. It was named after Julius Caesar, as it was the month he was born in, and was previously known as Quintilis, which meant "fifth" (the Romans originally had only ten months in the calendar - starting with "Martius" or March). He was born Gaius Julius Caesar of the ancient and powerful Julia family, which boasted the claim that they were derived from Iulus, a son of the Trojan Prince Aeneas, which in legend was said to be the son of Venus.
The Romans celebrated the festivals Poplifugia and Ludi Apollinares, the latter celebrating the God Apollo by playing "ludi" or games, which were held at the Circus Maximus, and included equestrian games like chariot racing, as well as theatrical performances.

The birthstone of July is the ruby, which is one of the four precious stones, including sapphire, emerald, and diamond. It's names comes from the Latin ruber, meaning simply "red". The birth flowers are larkspur also known as delphinium, and the water lily. The Zodiac signs are Cancerand Leo, inspired by the myth of the Nemean lion, a beast with hide impenetrable by human weapons. To kill the lion was the first of Heracles' twelve labors.

July in other languages: Juillet (French), July
Flowers: Lily, Lillian, Lilith, Crina ("Lily"), Nerida ("Water lily"), Niloofar ("Water lily"), Larkspur, Delphine/Delphina, Fenella (a type of larkspur), Victoria (a type of water lily), Castalia (a subgenus of night blooming water lilies)
Gems: Ruby, Rubina
Zodiac: River, Brook/e; Ari ("Lion"), Leo, Ariel ("Lion of God"), Lev ("Lion"), Leonidas ("Lion")
Seventh: Septimus ("Seventh")
Other: Julia/Julie, Julius/Julian/Jules, Gaius/Caius, Iulus, Apollo/Apollon/Apollinaire/Apollonia/Apolline

August

The American Girl, August 1935
Yikes, I got sidetracked again! I'm so sorry and I'm definitely finishing these this time!

August is the eighth month of the year. Originally called Sextillis, as it was the sixth month of the original Roman calendar, it wasn't until 8 BC that it became the eighth month and was renamed after Augustus. It was a month of many festivals, like Tiberinalia, which honored the god "Father Tiber" or Tiberius, and celebrated agricultural bounty, or Nemoralia, the "festival of torches", which celebrated the goddess Diana Nemorensisor Diana of Nemi, "Diana of the woods". This festival was later adapted into The Feast of Assumption. During August there are several meteor showers that are visible, like the Kappa Cygnids, and the Southern Delta Aquariids, named after the brightest star, Delta Aquarii in the constellation Aquarius.

The birthstones of August are peridot and sardonyx, a type of red onyx. Flowers are the gladiolus, also known as the "sword lily", and the poppy. Zodiac signs are Leo the lion, and the virgin Virgo, based on a maiden known as Astraea, who in Greek mythology was the last immortal to leave earth when the other gods fled to Olympus.

August in other languages: Agosto (Spanish), Augustus (Dutch), Elokuu (Finnish), Agasata (Punjabi)
August as a name: August, Augusta/Augustus, Augustine, Auguste, Avgust/Avgusta
Flowers: Poppy, Amapola (poppy in Spanish), Unikko (poppy in Finnish) Stellatus (a type of gladiolus), Priscilla (a gladiolus hybrid)
Gems: Peridot, Olivine (peridot is a type of Olivine)
Zodiac: Leo, Ari ("Lion"), Ariel ("Lion of God"), Lev ("Lion"), Leonidas, Leontina ("Lion"); Dido (Possibly "virgin"), Parthenia ("Maiden, virgin"), Virginia (Meaning unknown, but historically associated with virgo), Astraea/Astraia/Astra
Eighth: Octavius/Octavia/Octavian/Octave ("Eighth")
Other: Diana, Delta, Nemi

Nolwenn Leroy
Nolwenn - This charming Breton name is said to come from the phrase "Noyal gwenn", meaning "holy one from Noyal" (though some claim it means "white lamb"), is one I can't get my mind off of. It would fit in perfectly in America, and is unusual without being too strange. Breton singer Nolwenn Leroy is also beautiful in a mystical, Arthurian way that only adds to name's charms.

Ellis - I watched the WWII film "Black Book", which tells the story of Rachel Stein who, in order to survive, starts working for the Dutch resistance under the name of Ellis de Vries. I can't find any information on the name's use among the Dutch but I think it's really lovely.

Mahershalalhashbaz and Amatus - I recently watched a clip of actor Mahershala Ali on Jimmy Kimmel talking about the baby he's expecting, and how they want something unique, but maybe not as unusual as their names. They talk some about his name, and how Mahershala is actually a nickname - his full name is Mahershalalhashbaz, the longest word in the Bible and the name of the prophet Isaiah's son. It means "hurry to the spoils!". His wife's name is Amatus - which means "beloved" in Latin, and was the name of a 7th-century (male) saint.

Anouk Aimée
Anouk -
Origin: Dutch and French
Gender: Female
Meaning: A diminutive of Anna, "favor" or "grace"
Pronunciation: ah-NOOK
Other forms: Anna, Anke, Anneke, Ninon
Combos: Anouk Meraud, Anouk Evangeline, Penelope Anouk, Marianne Anouk, Sophie Anouk

Anouk is another one of those "if I was French/Dutch I would totally use that" sort of names. While I think Anouk would fit in swimmingly in America, it's just not for me to use. French actress Anouk Aimée was born Nicole FrançoiseFlorence Sorya Dreyfus to actor Henri Murray (Henry Dreyfus) and actress Geneviève Sorya. She made her film debut at age fourteen, playing "Anouk" in La Maison sous la mer, and kept the name. Later, while writing Les amants de Véronespecifically for her, Jacques Prévert suggested she take the last name Aimée (which means "beloved" in French) "that would forever associate her with the affective power of her screen roles."

Meraud -
Origin: Cornish
Gender: Female
Meaning: Possibly having something to do with "sea"
Pronunciation: N/A
Other forms: N/A
Combos: Meraud Daylily, Meraud Violet, Josephine Meraud, Daphne Meraud, Meraud Pearl

A recent discovery and fancy, I found Meraud in this post on British Baby Names. It's meaning is unknown, but possibly has something to do with the Cornish mor, "sea". While it may be a little too adventurous for some as a first name, I think it makes an unusual and stunning middle.

Munro -
Origin: Scottish
Gender: Unisex
Meaning: "From the mouth of the Roe"
Pronunciation: mun-ROE
Other forms: Monroe, Munrowe, Monrowe
Combos: Delia Munro, Kitty Munro, Sibylla Munro, Felicity Munro, Munro Delphine

My favorite spelling of the name, (it brings to mind strong-willed Cora Munro from The Last of the Mohicans) this version could even get away with being a bit of a nature name - In Scotland any mountain over 3'000 feet is called a "munro". They are named after Sir Hugh Munro, 4th Baronet, who was the one who first wrote a list of these hills. The most well known munro is the Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the British Isles. Another nature connection is in the meaning,"from the mouth of the Roe", the Roe being a river in Northern Ireland.

French actress Suzanne Bianchetti
Suzanne - I'm really intrigued by this name here lately, after first coming across it in this post on Jolis Prénoms, and then realizing it was quite popular in France. Could it work over here?

Gustaf - I was really pleasantly surprised when I saw this name in this post The Best Gift of Life, where it was this woman, Emelie's, husband's name. Gustaf is an absolute guilty pleasure of mine, and I love seeing it in use. They also have a equally wonderfully named daughter, Nico Anaïs Rio Belle - she goes simply by her second middle name.

Colter - At my job I meet a ton of kids. The other day I met a little boy named Colter (not sure on the spelling). I wonder if it was a family name? Possibly inspired by explorer John Colter? I can only hope it wasn't after a certain Ms. Coulter...
